Exceed Feed 4 cups/day!

Post by GSPVIZ » Thu Jan 03, 2008 5:17 pm

Hello All,

I am new here to the forum. From what I have seen so far this looks very informative.

My 2 yr old GSP and 1 yr old Vizsla eat around 4 cups of Exceed a day. I think this is very excessive. Also, I fill a grocery bag of poop every week!

They are very lean. No fat at all.

I am thinking about switching and I am wondering if I switch to a more premium food, it will cut back their intake?

I was going to start the Vizsla on Innova but I heard that it may be too rich for the GSP.

Any ideas?

What makes you think it is excessive? And if a "premium" feed costs more will it make you feel better if they eat a little less but it costs more? These are just questions to ask yourself before doing anything.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

That is my dilema. I just think that 4 cups a day seems crazy. They are in the kennels all but 6 hrs a day.

I too feed exceed chicken and rice.. I have fed many different feeds and it seems to work well with my dogs. I have one 1.5 year old male (65 pounds) that eats 4 cups a day. One 45 pound female 3 cups a day and a 40 pound female eats 2.5 cups a day. Believe it or not all dogs require different amounts. You can feed what the bag says if you want, but the tale-tale sign is in the dog.. Exceed is a good feed. For some reason I keep going back to it.
I have never had excessive amount of clean-up with it.. except when I was feeding too much..

How large is your grocery bag? Have you had the stools checked ?

A normal sized plastic grocery bag. Yes the stools have been checked. The Vizsla had a tapeworm but she took the meds and it cleared up.

I dont think 4 cups a day is excessive at all. I have 5 Shorthairs and 4 of them eat 4 cups a day and another 5 cups of Pro Plan Salmon formula. I have a Doberman (77 pounds) who eats 6 cups a day.

You can use this chart to see how much your dog may require and then calculate the amont by the K/cals your food provides.
http://www.mycockerspaniel.com/mer.htm
If you dog weighs in the neighborhood of 60-65 lbs and moderate activity it would need 1670 calories of so. For the younger dog it would probably be even higher. Somewhere in the 2000 range.
Estimating the K/cals of the food to be around the 400 range. ( not sure due to unable to find an information on the food.) Just a average of most foods. That would mean you would be right where you should be.

It's best though to just look at your dog. Did you try to back down the amount of food by a small percentage and see if the weight dropped in conjunction with?

I have 3 dogs and feed Innova and Canidae. My 4 yr old maintains her weight on less than 2 cups a day. I try to feed her more but she won't eat it. She weighs 44 lbs The brand of Innova is the EVO meat based product. 42 percent protein. My 14 yr old gets fed Canidae and maintains his weight on 2 cups a day. My 16 week old pup gets fed Canidae and is doing fine on 2 cups a day. Works for me

Canidae

I have a friend with a 2 yr. old Vizsla as a family pet not a hunting dog and she eats 4 cups per day of Canidae to maintain proper weight. She now weighs 50 lbs, looks great, lean, well muscled and not skinny looking anymore.

I would say our Airedale eats at least 4 cups a day. He is about 70 pounds and he also has virtually no fat, despite getting relatively little exercise during the winter months. We feed Kirkland Signature Chicken & Rice formula.

Exceed Yellow/Black

Post by Hotpepper » Mon Jan 07, 2008 9:39 am

I have been feeding 4 cups of Yellow/Black Exceed for a long time, maybe 10 years. I have great health and have had long life for my dogs, they are healthy, happy and coats are beautiful.

I can expect no more from a great dog food. The cost is more than competative and it is good for my hunting gsp's. When working them hard, I increase the amount of feed.

They do very well.

My skinny 47 lb male Vizsla house dog gets over 2 cups of Pro Plan a day plus some treats. So, 4 cups of Exceed a day is very much within reason.

Best, Greg J.

WHich exceed are you feeding? The lamb and rice or chicken and rice?

I use the lamb and rice for my pups and the younger male who burns a ton of calories gets just over 3 cups a day and the older girl at 4.5 years gets just over 2 cups a day. They are lean and mean running machines. Check your measuring "cup"
