GWP water test
GWP water test
Can anybody here either give me information or provide me with a link as to what a GWP has to do to pass the water portion of AKC SH and MH titles?
Just got a GWP. New breed for me.I am an experienced dog guy with serious credentials in quite a number of dog activities, and I like to put titles on my dogs. However, water work is not in my background, and it seems a water test is mandatory for a SH or MH title with a GWP. I am having trouble finding out what they have to do.
Help appreciated.Thank you.

Re: GWP water test
I will try to find the link, but it is a requirement to get an AKC title on a wirehair. Its pretty basic throw a dead bird 20 yards in a pond blank and the dog retrieves it. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

WATER TEST
open to all pointing breeds six months of age or over on the
first day of the event. The Water Test shall be judged by two
approved field trial or hunting test judges. The dog shall
retrieve a dead game bird from the water after a swim of
about 20 yards to the bird. The handler shall stand (6) six
feet from the water, and the dog must demonstrate its
willingness to enter the water, to swim, and to retrieve, at
the direction of its handler without being touched or intimidated.
Style shall not be considered. The dogs shall not be
placed, but shall either pass or fail. The Judges shall certify
on the judging sheets the particulars of each dog that passed
the test.

Well live and learn: Did not even know the AKC had a water test. Huh? Good deal such as it is. Is this a test for a full grown dog or puppy?

It is part of the hunt test requirements for SH and MH. You can do them anytime you think the dog is ready. So yes, they are for mature dogs if that is what you need.Ruffshooter wrote:Well live and learn: Did not even know the AKC had a water test. Huh? Good deal such as it is. It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Thanks for the replies. Sometimes you post a response and it seems that the inquirer never reads it. I did.
Wilsonwires,I live in St. Louis and will very definitely be at the national specialty. However, bruin's info and link was sufficiently clear that I'll be watching the FTs rather than the water test. As mentioned, I am a long way from a novice dog guy, but this is a new breed for me and my previous HT experience didn't include water work. I now understand what's needed. Wouldn't be a bad idea for a number of other pointing breeds to require the same, at least at MH levels, also, imo.
Thanks. Good board.
