choke collar

Post by mattson08 » Fri Nov 13, 2009 8:34 am

Hey guys just wondering when is a good age to start with the choke collar. I got a 10 month old lab and would like to start working on heel. Too young?

thanks

I don't think a choke collar is ever the right tool to use. But in a few months you could start more serious training and use a pinch collar if needed. But in all honsety I have never found a real need for one but am not saying they can be helpful with some dogs.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Welcome to the forum. :) I don't want to come on too heavy but..........

Definately not at 10 weeks. I've never used a choke collar and never will. There are so many better ways to teach heel. Check into the "wonder lead" thread and try to get your hands on the 2 Huntsmith videos for " Puppy Development". They can be ordered on line.

too young in my opinion....let him be a puppy a while.

To start you may want to teach him to "give to his neck" , check cord him to a tree or sumthing solid, step away and let him jump and pull all he wants. when he calms
and realizes he isnt going anywhere he has probably learned to "give to his neck".

Also never say heel when the dog isnt at heel.....put him on a regular leash and walk with him....turn 90 degrees give a sharp tug on the leash. When he is beside you again
say Heel and give him a atta boy. He will learn quickly that heel is right beside you.
The second kick from a mule is of very little educational value - from Wing and Shot.

At 10 weeks you don't really need a choke (I would never use one) or a pinch collar. Start by just walking the pup on a leash about 5 minutes three times a day and it will get the message. As your pup gets older you should increase the time spent. That should be all that is needed at this time. The rest of the time should be spent playing with your pup.

You have gotten good advise hear. I agree he is too young. All dogs are different but just a regular leash, collar and healing stick has worked for me.
If you think you can or if you think you can't, you are right either way
