Traveling with dog and quails
Traveling with dog and quails
Hi all,
This weekend I will be going quail and pheasent hunting at a friends farm and plan to take my young pup (7 months) to introduce him to birds...
I dont plan to shoot over him, but i want to start with some blankshots and birds.
(He has had some experience with quails before)
Birds are not 100% sure, so just in case, to make things a bit easier I plan to buy some 5 or 6 live quails and take them with me just in case.
My question is...
Is it a clever idea to do so? or is the dog going to go crazy with a 4 hour trip and 6 live birds in such a closed space?
Thanks

Re: Traveling with dog and quails
where do you carry the dog? ie: in the car, cabin of a truck, bed of a truck ?
Re: Traveling with dog and quails
Inside the car... It´s a "state wagon" type.
Re: Traveling with dog and quails
If you have him in a kennel in the wagon you wont have a problem, but I wouldnt say the same thing having a pup running loose in the car with the birds in there. Just put him in a kennel and you wont have any problems plus it is safer for the dog AND you.

Re: Traveling with dog and quails
yeah I carry him in the kennel... I am just worried that the scent of 6 live birds in a closed space for such a long will teach him to "ignore" that smell in the field. (Am i making any sense??)
I am sure that its just an over-protective rookie trainer nonsense, but everyone has told me that I have a dog with a lot of potential, and I am still trying to figure out what can "spoil" a dog "forever" or not. :S - more nonsense I am sure... but scary nevertheless-
Thanks

Re: Traveling with dog and quails
Its no big deal if your going to have him kenneled in the car and not running free. I routinely carry hundreds of birds in the back of my truck with the dogs in the dog box, literally inches away from their noses.

The dog will be alright but quail can really stink up a car.Maybe 5 or 6 will not be too bad.

I wouldn't worry as much about having the scent close to your dog as having the bird crap, dander and smell in the car with you
Re: Traveling with dog and quails
LOL
Ok, message understood
as a side note, It IS astonishing the amount of crap such small birds can produce...

It certainly is. Make sure the quail can't escape. I had about 25 get out in the car once as I was driving. Not fun.

I can picture that. I thought swatting at one bee was a chore while driving.Make sure the quail can't escape. I had about 25 get out in the car once as I was driving. Not fun.

You know how you sometimes stick a bird in your coat when you're training ? I had done that. On the way home I stopped for gas.Reached into my pocket for my wallet and ...............you guessed it. The clerk screamed; the other people ran for the door. A never to be forgotten moment.

Too Funny ! Another good reason to kennel your dog in the car. What a scene that would have been.Sharon wrote:It certainly is. Make sure the quail can't escape. I had about 25 get out in the car once as I was driving. Not fun.
