Teaching come with collar

Post by fratelle » Thu Feb 25, 2010 4:08 am

Can't work out how to work with the come or here command and incorporate the electric collar. I did not get training DVD with my collar and cannot get anything in Australia a few hints to get started.

Where in Australia are you? I have a number of client/friends in your country who use my method, one of whom won the Australian National in 2005.

Fratelle,
This is the technique we use here at Pine Creek Grouse dog Trainers. First we train with Dogtra Train and Beep collars, the collars are usually introduced to the pups when they are about 6 months old. They play with them on, around the kennel property in our large woods, at this point they have already been trained to respect the
Pet-Safe invisible 60 yard fence. During the play periods the pup will be called to one of the trainers, about 10 times a day sometimes more, each time the pup is called the beeper portion of the collar is activated two times, the pup learns that the beeper going off twice, means that he must come to the master. At some time during this training the pup will ignore the masters double beep call, at this point the pup is stimulated (Shocked) mildly. Usually with Setters, this only happens one time, and the pup is right beside the master, after the double beep. The come training is then expanded outside the 60 yard Pet-Safe invisable fence, as field training progresses. We train all the different dog breeds to come immediately to the double beep, later as training continues the pup /dog learns that a single beep is a locator beep, and the dog disreguards that single beep, when working or on point. Needless to say there is a lot more to this technique, however this over view will get you started. Hope this helped you out a might.

The only thing that I do different than "Ryman" is the first time the dog is stimulated with the collar, we have a long cord tied to the collar. We say "come" and stimulate and pull the cord. Now the dog knows why he feels the stimulation. Use a low stim level and continue the stim while pulling the dog to you. Stop the stim when he is by your side. This is the method that was included with both sets of e-collars that we bought.

If you just zap him, he won't know what to do to stop the tingling. By pulling him to you, you are making it clear that to stop the stimulation, he must return to you. After that lesson is learned, we then add vibrate after the verbal command and before the stimulation. Now the dog knows that vibrate is a gentle warning before the stimulation.

We rarely use the stimulation, our dogs all obey the vibration. We now only use stimulation only in emergencies, such as snakes, bobcats, crossing a road pursuing game, etc.

A/C guy,
Absolutely correct sir, we do the check cord method with pups that have not already been started in our kennel, the pup must understand what the call command is prior to any discipline, no matter which method you choose to use. The actual shock end of the T&B collar is used so little with our training methods, that most of our dogs have seldom if ever experienced it. It gets used as a breaker on a few Deer chasers and to keep dogs way from snakes however.

Fratelle,

Check out The Dobbs library of info on e-collar useage. Lots of excellent info. Dobbs Training Center in No. California was the training center for Tri-Tronics collars for many years.
