Recall Pen?
Recall Pen?
I guess this is kind of a dumb question but I figured I might as well ask.................. How exactly do you use a recall pen to train a dog? Will the birds go immediately back to the pen after being flushed? What kinds of birds can you use for this?

Bob Whites, keep them in the Johnny house for about 2 weeks before using them. Try to use the males first, they seem to recall better than the hens, and make sure that the recall funnel is at ground level that the birds on the outside can easily see the birds in the Johnny house. You will lose birds, but most will find their way home.

Can the bobwhites be tough for pups because they don't leave a whole lot of scent or is that not usually a problem?

They will leave plenty of sent. The problem you may have is the pup catching them if they are not good flyers.Preston25 wrote:Can the bobwhites be tough for pups because they don't leave a whole lot of scent or is that not usually a problem?
Re: Recall Pen?
How long could you expect to keep quail in a recall pen and still have them be good fliers? Where I train my dog I cannot shoot the birds for her, so I would be constantly re-using the same quail. Is getting the quail out every few days to fly enough to keep them flying well? I have just about given up on using pen raised quail for training because I have had bad experiences with them not flying well.

You could try to get some cotournix quail. They are a small quail with large scent. Not strong fliers, but work well when planted with bobwhite quail or helping a pup find the scent.Preston25 wrote:Can the bobwhites be tough for pups because they don't leave a whole lot of scent or is that not usually a problem?
