tipping a trainer

Post by S&J gsp » Wed Sep 14, 2011 6:37 pm

Just a question. Does anyone tip the trainer anymore?

Is the trainer employed by another? Or working on his own?

If he/she is an employee, and you feel a tip is warranted, by all means slip him/her a few bucks. But if the trainer is the owner...screw that.

I tip to show my appreciation for good communication and care for my dog.

So why would you not tip the trainer if they are the owner? heck, they gotta pay the bills!

I receive tips all the time, and I am the owner/trainer. I have received a $100 tip on several occasions and less many more. As a trainer, when that owner brings back that dog that he gave me a $100 tip, you can bet I do an extra good job for them the next time. While I don`t expect a tip I learned a long time ago that if someone is happy and wants to give me money I take it, with a big THANK YOU ! Everyone is happy. Nothing wrong with that.

I usually will bring them a gift whenever I see them. We have southern foods that are usually well received. They can't get them where they live.

I've never had a trainer, but I thought it was a general rule that you don't tip an owner. I believe it is because that in some jobs the employees are payed less than should be because the owner knows their income is supplemented by tips.

That would not be the case with dog trainers; you get precious few tips.

Many time the owner and the trainer are the same. Tip him. He or she works darn hard for that money.

...good bourbon

I believe in competition the dogs will either give the pro trainers and handlers cause for celebration or drive them to drink.
We may as well be practical about it.

LOL Funny that you mention that! One of the things I bring is FireFly Sweet Tea Vodka. I also used to give a bottle of port wine to my last trainer as that was a favorite of theirs.

This year possibly a bottle of Patron or Crown Royal as I know those are my trainer's favorites!

Because you're paying a monthly bill, directly to the owner. The owner/trainer's fee should include good communication and service, if you don't feel it is, you should look elsewhere. The "hired man" on the other hand sees only an hourly wage.

My farrier? No tip, he works for himself...but if he brings an apprentice that works on my horses, he would see a tip if warranted. The fella (owner) that services my vehicles, no tip....but his oil change employee might.

I've been self employed for 30 years, mine is a business to business sale. I have never ever received a tip from a customer...I am the owner.
