Roading with 4 wheeler
Roading with 4 wheeler
We just bought a 4 wheeler to road off of. We are making a roading bar for the front. how far should the dog be hooked up from the front tire and how much slack in chain from the bar down to the dog? Thanks
Re: Roading with 4 wheeler
The answer? It depends.
Have Howie lay a 2x4 across the front...start with maybe 48" sticking out from the fender/tire. Then get a dog, in the harness, then use a length of chain. You want to ensure that the dog in no way can get a leg under a wheel......so start out much too long and and shorten the bar accordingly. I think maybe 18" of chain should work.

....but you want the chain long enough to give the dog a nice line of pull, and not jerk him off the ground or slam him if you hit some bumps.....
The second kick from a mule is of very little educational value - from Wing and Shot.

4 feet on each side seems like alot but Ok that's where we'll start. We're only putting 1 dog per side.

I use 2 bungey cords, hooked together to keep from jerking them, in case they stop to use the bathroom .

Re: Roading with 4 wheeler
yes, it also gives them something to pull against.
Re: Roading with 4 wheeler
I roaded this am, so I went and measured. Mine is 45" out, and the end of the bar is 32" off the ground.Ms. Cage wrote:Thanks Dan!!!
Now I didn't measure the length of chain, that could change depending on the over all length of the harness. But I did measure from the breast collar portion of the harness to the attachment point on the bar, and that is 40"....and that can put the dog a tad close to the wheel.

Would someone mind posting a picture of their successful rig? I would like to try this and want to make sure I am understanding what has been written.
Thanks!

I am going to add a small piece of chain soon, but so far this has worked well for me

The receiver is 1 1/4" galvanized pipe ubolted to the quad. The pole is 3/4" galv. pipe. A hole is drilled through the receiver and pipe and held in place with one of these.bb560m wrote:is that inner pole telescopic - how do you lock it in place?brad27 wrote:I am going to add a small piece of chain soon, but so far this has worked well for me

Here are more pics. 38" from eye bolt to tire. 33.5" ground to bottom of eye bolt. Chains are different lengths because of different harnesses.
