Videos and books for the newbie
Videos and books for the newbie
I am new to all of this and would like some advise on what is regarded as good learning material. I have the book Training With Mo. I was wondering if there is a video that demonstrates the book? What are some other resources that would be the best for someone just getting started? I have 2 Brittanys, one of which is a little softer than the other. So far, all I have done is work on the "kennel" and "here" commands. Thanks.

Yes there is a video that compliments Maurice's book; I would recommend it. :
PM: Mo on here or get one from Martha Greenlee.

Yep. Martha's website - you can email her: http://steadywithstyle.com/gallery/ There is a West/Gibbons workshop from a few years back that Martha sells for a very reasonable price.Meller wrote:Yes there is a video that compliments Maurice's book; I would recommend it. :

The other West system DVD is from Dave Walker: http://www.davewalkerdogs.com/vid-lab.htm Disregard the "Lab" portion - I haven't seen this one, but have heard that it's very good.
Also hard to beat Perfect Start/Perfect Finish DVD's: http://www.perfectionkennel.com/video_series.htm
The Huntsmith DVD's are the most professionally done which is good and bad. Good in that the quality of what's there is excellent. Bad in that they give you just enough to get started, but you really need to sign up for work$hop$ to get their full training picture. http://www.huntsmith.com/ scroll to mid-page.

The second kick from a mule is of very little educational value - from Wing and Shot.

Rick and his dad need to get this back in print. They are leaving a lot of "chips on the table". I wonder if the Terrant family owns the rights to it?birddog1968 wrote:Everyone should read this one at least once

Don't know, but I agree someone should get it printed again. It's a timeless book and just a great read.
My copy has teeth marks on the binding from my first Britt. Gotta keep a better handle on the next mutt

What is with these Britts....They love to eat hard cover book spines. So far they have gone after "Jenney Willow" My Vet book, and the latest, "Snakefoot"!! Really ticked my off. I should blame myself but I am not in the mood to do that right now.AzDoggin wrote:Don't know, but I agree someone should get it printed again. It's a timeless book and just a great read.

Plus 1 on the HuntSmith method.
I went through every book, magazine and video I could find from Ben O. Williams to George Hickox and on and on (not to take anything away from those guys as they are great dog men) until Sonny Piekarz from Hay Creek Kennel in Gilman, WI volunteered to help with a gund dog demo at our Pheasants Forever youth day. I was blown away by his dogs, swallowed hard and ponied up the cash to attend the HuntSmith Foundation seminar held by Rick Smith at his place in WI a few weeks later.
All I can say is that I wish I would have found these guys first! I will be back to every HuntSmith seminar I can possibly attend.
