Starting in Field Trials
Starting in Field Trials
I'd like to get started with my puppy in field trials. I think it would be a fun thing to do with my kids in the hunting off season. My 8 month old setter covers a lot of ground, hunts in front of me within 100 yards, holds his point well, and comes when called. He doesn't retrieve yet. I also don't want to do anything on horseback. Would he be qualified to run in puppy events this summer? I see AKC has some puppy field trial events. Do any of the other field trial/hunt test organizations? There seem to be several sponsoring organizations for field trial events. NSTRA etc. It's a little confusing for a beginner so excuse all the questions. Thanks

Where did you get your setter from, and what part of the state are you in?

A walking field trial club! Bravo. I like the horseback trials but they are more about trials and less about bird dogs. My experience with walking stakes is that they are more about bird dogs. The only other walking club I know of is the Irish Field Trial Club of Wash. I think that's want it's called. One that Red delicious belongs to. I went last spring and it was great! Going again this month.PntrRookie wrote:Brian, our SE Wisconsin club will be holding multiple field trials this spring and we would love to meet you! I pity the man that has never been loved by a dog!
