Putting pigeons on Dogs backs ?
Putting pigeons on Dogs backs ?
I was watching a video of a guy doing some training and he was putting a pigeon on the Dogs back while it was on point.
There was no audio so i couldn't tell why he was doing it so i was wondering if anyone has seen this and why you would do it.

I've seen several people claim that it was a steadying drill. For what it's worth I've never seen it done by a pro.

As the Great Delmar Smith is so famous for stating, "Never Set up your dog to fail"
Why do this with a pointing breed unless you are doing tricks to amuse your friends.

To improve a gundog's regal posture and equipoise?
Or maybe to train pigeons to ride bareback in the pointer rodeo?
Hey, Neil - I was "telling" our British friends what you already know, I'm sure - that Boykins are actually used by biologists in turtle and tortoise tracking - albeit not because they're slow as in tortoise-and-hare fables, but because it's a most utilitarian thing for this "poised" breed to do: http://www.fws.gov/refuges/mediatipshee ... escue.html.

"Pigeons on a dog's back" sounds like a parlor trick to me.
Now if you put a dog in the bird pen you can really see what the dog is made of.

As saiid, parlor trick. As is putting the dog in a bird pen.
MG,
Yes,. I knew about the Boykin for turtles. They also use them for mushrooms. I am not sure how they are any better than the other breeds. But I donated a couple to police departments and developed a following I had trouble supporting that I understood, ate less, took up less space and were amusing.
