What is trash breaking?

Post by rlrobinhood » Tue Mar 11, 2014 10:00 pm

Hi all,

I've seen this term used before, but not really sure what it means. I've seen it used in conjunction with behaviors the dog is exhibiting, but not wanted. I think where I've seen it is in reference to barking?

Just curious what this means. Thanks.

It usually means breaking a dog off game you don't want your dog chasing or running like deer etc.

gotcha. so, what does trash breaking entail? Is it high stimulus on the collar?

That is the easiest and most effective way.

You're such a politician( sometimes). :) Yes you give a good blast hoping you only have to do it once- deer , skunk, snakes etc..

This thread reminds me of my first experience with an ecollar. I put my brand new collar on a Brit that had never once run trash. Within five minutes he found and was sprayed by a skunk. I did not need "high stimulis" to convince him to leave skunks alone from then on but I never did get all the stink off that collar.

You have to remember what smells and tastes good to a dog is considerably different that what we think.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Ah, good point. Just before I lost my last Brittany, I hunted a new place that I've never hunted before. Exact same terrain I always hunt, but this one had a very small seasonal creek that ran through it. Anyways, in about 4-hours of hunting, we had run into three porcupines. I've never seen them out on the plains before, but I guess that small creek kept a small population there. Not even a tree on the place, but some shelterbelts. Anyways, I just barely was able to pull him back (physically) from two of the porcupines before he got on them. Would this have been a "trash break" situation?

Thanks.

Once he's on top of them it's too late for the e collar imo. Timing is everything with trash breaking situations too.( assuming your question was serious. :) )
