Force Fetch Tips
Force Fetch Tips
Any tips to get my dog to open his mouth when starting fetch? He's holding real well so started a toe hitch. Applying substantial pressure and will not open. Same way with his ear. Should I just be persistent?

Pickup on his flank. When the rear leg starts to come up he will let go.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Re: Force Fetch Tips
You're missing a step. To start fetch, start with the Jowls, pinching the jaws HARD on the canine teeth and commanding FETCH. When the dog takes the buck, command HOLD. DO NOT let him lower his head; if he drops his head, he'll drop the buck. Keep his head looking UP into your EYES. If he starts to lower his head, tap him under the jaw with a short heeling stick and command NO, HOLD!. If his head is pointed up and looking into your eyes, it's hard for him to spit out the bumper.
Once he is doing this, proceed to the ear and scrap that "bleep" toe hitch.

Thanks! That's what I was looking for.

pay attention to the way your doing the ear pinch. Your finger position on the collar tang can make a big difference. I noticed when FFing my GSP. You want an instant, sharp pinch. Not a dull pinch where you have to keep increasing pressure. It will facilitate a quicker reaction. At least it worked for me once i figured it out.
