New owner of a GSP
New owner of a GSP
Good morning all! My wife and I are the new owners of our very first GSP. We got him 2 weeks ago today and he was 8 weeks old. My questions are what some good techniques to use when trying to train this bundle of energy, basic obedience training is all I'm working in at this point, my goal is to eventually run some field trails with him and do some hunting as well. My problems so far are not bring able to get his attention long enough to work with him on his obedience. I previous dog was a chocolate lab and i really did not run into these issues with her. Any and all advise would be greatly appreciated.

RELax. Takes a few steps backwards. He is a baby . Obedience will happen ,but for now relax. The most important thing pup needs right now is socialization , exercise/play to tire him out , crate training , and housebreaking ( which will take weeks).
( Too bad you bad you got him at 6 weeks , but it's done now so ....................)
oh yes ... Congrats on your new dog. You are in for a great ride.![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
and welcome to the forum . You'll need a hard hat and bullet- proof vest sometimes , but it's a GREAT place to learn about your first dog.
..................
If you are interested in trialing , get to some trials this Fall to learn and talk to the experienced. Take pup ( after 2 sets of shots) ; stake him out and he'll learn lots too.

Sharon gave you some great advice - socialize, socialize, socialize. His environment will teach him SO much. At his age keep "training sessions" to short 10-15 min sessions starting with teaching him his name, then COME, then NO. Play with him and throw toys for him to nurture his retrieve instincts. Find as many resources as you can - books, videos, YouTube - and join a club or group of bird dog/gun dog enthusiast that can guide you and him in your training.
A dog on point.....steady, yet trembling,
Breathing in and tasting the gentle breeze.
Take a moment for yourself to soak it all in,
All the training, the hard work.....it really has paid off.

"You need a hard hat and a bullet proof vest"
Here's a couple of volleys ...
What level of obedience did you have your choc lab at 10 weeks of age?
Please tell us

Here are 6 short videos for 2-3 months. Use his food for this. I don't use a clicker personally. Still works. Good way to start a pup out. I personally don't teach sit to a pointing breed. Some do. And I would hold off a while before adding the vibrate on a collar. You want a happy confident pup at this age. Absolutely no stimulation at this age.

They say that around 16 weeks old things get really bad, is this true?
