Shooting Over Running Dogs
Re: Shooting Over Running Dogs
Must admit that the idea of "singing" to a dog as it hunts really has me scratching at my turnip ! The way I sing would mean I always had to hunt on my own !

Oh, my, Higgins! You're quite the accomplished belter!
And here I am trying to figure out just how to walk and chew gum at the same time!

Thank you. Some say it's the dry desert air. Here is a short video of the rest of the handlers and one of their favorite tunes.Fozzie's Mom wrote:Oh, my, Higgins! You're quite the accomplished belter!

Re: Shooting Over Running Dogs
O.K. ....confession time.
I have sung during hunts but only with my dogs as an audience. When I used to do grouse counts for various estates with my pointing dogs I sometimes sang at the top of my voice while walking over the hills to reach the stretches of hillside to be hunted. Somehow, being up in the hills all on my own made me feel like the king of the world ! So I sang !

Re: Shooting Over Running Dogs
More-often-than-not, I would only "sing" to my dog as required, only. For example, there may have been a "Y" on the course and I needed my dog to turn one way versus the other.
I once had a dog in a trial disappear in dense cover. She had been missing for some time and so I had to either find a dog standing on point or show the dog moving forward on the course. She disappeared on our left so I sang softly to the front and swung my voice with growing gusto to our right. My dogs knew that it meant show yourself in the direction indicated (if you're not on point).
The judge said to me, "Why are you singing to the right? Your dog was last seen on our left."
I sat in the saddle thinking, "And this guy is my judge?!?!?" The dog showed up front and crossed the course to our right.
I have been braced with handlers that sang while their dogs were under foot. It didn't compliment their dog.

Re: Shooting Over Running Dogs
I have a memory of you telling me off for how I was singing. LOL I would look into the dog's direction and sing into the dog -useless of course. You taught me more than you know Sir.

Re: Shooting Over Running Dogs
Thanks Sharon. Hey...others might do things their way and get still get around the course.
Some dogs are trained to need that singing. It's their conduit to the handler. I see no need for it what-so-ever for a capable gun dog. That said, there are far too many hunters that seem to need to hear themselves when handling their gun dogs. Then they have the nerve to ask, "Why does my dog bump so many (wild) birds? Maybe he doesn't have a good nose?"
These same gents are often shooting over bumped birds/running dogs because they have inadvertently taught their dogs to do so. It's the only shooting they will get.

I have a hard time remembering when I or any of companions shot over running dogs or chasing dogs. No reason to chase if the bird is not down!

Lot easier for Bill to grasp once he realizes "Higgins" is a leading practitioner of the vocal arts from his "singsong" pappy Professor 'enry 'iggins (Eliza Doolittle's "pre-transformational" pronunciation, in the key of Cockney, in "My Fair Lady.")Fozzie's Mom wrote:You mean, you don't all belt out show tunes as you plod around? Yeah, I spent some time on the stage in my younger years. The outdoors tends to bring out a tune every now and then, but I'm usually on the back of a horse when that happens. Good to know that you all won't gaffaw TOO loudly if I let one slip while out hunting.

Re: Shooting Over Running Dogs
Better not hear tell of y'all beltin' out "I Cain't Say No" with respect to shooting over the limit of Pa. grouse! And I darn tootin' mean that, Ado Annie!
In Bill T.'s honour, I would only croon Jack Buchanan ("And Her Mother Came, Too!") over my birddogs - one suave but bad Scottish hombre on "hooves:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5t5ozcrZqww
The retrievers get Connie Boswell, Vera Lynn and "The Queen," Dinah Washington - but they get their "sangin'" from the phonograph, not me.

No worries!! I'm SO new to this world, I have YET to even attempt to take down a grouse in the field! I'm thinking bagging my limit probably won't be an issue any time soon. :roll:crackerd wrote:Better not hear tell of y'all beltin' out "I Cain't Say No" with respect to shooting over the limit of Pa. grouse! If you get too good, we may have to pair you up with Phil Harris on one of those sangin' duets a la Nat King and Natalie Cole. And if Phil's estate is tight-fisted with their creative properties, I'm authorized to say that Polmaise is on standby - and at good value from having trilled a tune or two with Sheena Easton from the saddles of their Shetland ponies whilst their Scottish haggis hounds were hunting the wily haggi.*Fozzie's Mom wrote:No worries!! *Got an international renown too, Robt. has - he and Our Sharon were in a trio with Stompin' Tom Connors over to Medicine Hat when their pointing dogs were pointing out the location of the Badlands Guardian out there. Wait a minute, might've been Terri Clark instead of Our Sharon that Robt. was accompanying back then - Sharon?
