Whoa post

Post by RatDog » Sun Jun 29, 2025 8:04 am

Whoa posting for the first time. I am like 20 reps in. I don’t know if my dog Nelly is a gifted student or what but she seems to have figured it out pretty quickly. Check chord her into the post, hook up the line on her flank with some slack, she stands still as I slowly walk to the end of the check chord, I gently pull and she slowly walks until the chord on her flank goes tight then she just stands still. There are limits to what she’ll let me do before she breaks as far as unhooking her and trying to step away but she’s pretty steady as far as I can tell.

That sound about right?

Guy told me to do it about 100x then transition to flank collar. Figure the reps don’t hurt even if I could get away with moving on sooner. Been doing 3 at a time once or twice a day.

I don’t know why I put this off. Appears to be as straightforward as promised. I’m sure it’ll all fall apart when I try to move to the collar or apply it in the real world but we will figure it out eventually

I’m off to buy some quail and do my first bird work session on my own. Feel so legit with the tip ups and bird bag and stuff haha got my 12 yo as an assistant who’s a bit moody these days regardless and especially so after being made to get up and help the old man mess with the dog hahahaha! Builds character

One of the important things when using a whoa post is not to panic if the dog does. If the dog wants to buck and fight, let it. You and the post are controlling the entire situation. Just calmly wait until she stops fighting, then proceed. Never take her off when she quits fighting the post or she'll think that her reward for fighting is to get off the post.
LIFE WITHOUT BIRD DOGS AND FLY RODS REALLY ISN'T LIFE AT ALL.
