Wed night training. Week Three.

Post by 12 Volt Man » Wed Mar 21, 2007 7:29 pm

Had another good training night.

Everyone worked on different issues. It was great to get out and work dogs.

Cooper crept in on his birds last weekend at the NSTRA trial. He is usually very solid on point. Tonight I worked on making him stand point by walking pigeons out in front of him.

Critter Control makes a pretty good bird planter.

I am so jealous. Those are some great pictures.

Nice pics. The dogs are looking good! I'm a bit jealous too, the snow here is gone for the most part but the mud is here in force. Hoping it dries up soon so I can get out into my fields.

I like the looks of those wires, too.

If I ever went another direction, I tink that would be it.

But, I'm on a good train and I'll ride it all the way to the round house.

Best, Greg J.

Almost need hip boots here to get to the dogs. The mud is really terrible this year. Really sucks. :x Our weather is holding right now and is supposed be dry and sunny for the next 4 days. Hopefully things dry up soon.

Those are some nice looking dogs.

Camera is a Nikon D70. I have not spent the time to figure out the best settings. I finally found something that worked on that night. Those shots were some of the best I have taken. They still needed a little help with photoshop. I think I may try the "RAW" mode soon.

Back in my 35mm days, cheap didn't normally mean low quaility. Seems optics follow a roller coaster of prices but quailty isn't effected by it. ..."pear"

I've been a bit busy to post pics...finally getting around to it.

These sessions are great. We're learning a lot and the dogs are coming right along.

I had to leave a little early, so I took these pics before everyone else arrived.

Jo-jo on point! No flagging either. (took lots of kicking in the bushes but she finally stopped. )

This is an honest first point from Oprah!

She held it for about 6 seconds (long enough for 3 pics) before she jumped in for the bird, which she chased down and...

As previously said, opinions vary.

One opinion is that letting the chase when they're young and catch a few builds desire and drive. A few and early on are the the operative words. A lot of field trialers hold this opinion.

Another opinion is to never let the dog catch a bird as it causes issues in getting the dog steady and a tendency to chase birds. A lot of hunting and versatile trainers hold this opinion.

In either mindset when a goof-up is made and the dog catches a bird, it isn't the end of the world. Don't make a big deal of it and the dog won't either.

Best regards, Greg J.

I love these pics of Heidi. What an awsome dog. I hope my pup turns out half as nice as that dog.
