Who has a braque francais ?
Who out there has a braque francais? I am curious if anyone on Gun dog forum has one. I was hoping some folks could share their experiences with them - hunting, house life etc. Please share the goods and the bads! Thank you.

bringing this back from the dead!
just this morning I ran into a guy that had a "French Pointer". At first I thought it was a GSP pup but found out nope, it was a 2yr old french pointer by the name of Dusty. Braque Francais. I have to admit I was very interested in this dog because it just looked and worked so well. My british lab and this frenchy hit it off and played well.
I have no idea about this breed so I asked him. He works her on pheasant mainly and even does ducks! The thing he told me was although he uses an e-collar on her the initial training as a pup and teen he had to go soft. No harsh voices. No heavy hand. He actually trained the dog mainly with food and praise. Said the dog is wonderful and is very low key in the house. Almost like a couch potato. But in the field she explodes into a working machine. This really peaked my interest but of course I can’t get another dog. Also I’m use to a lab… but boy if I consider a pointer in the future I just might look into these French pointers. He claimed they are not as high strung as a GSP and are very manageable and not “hyper”. He said it not me! He said he had a GSP back in 1992 and felt they are very hard headed and hyper and more difficult to train. I forgot where he got this dog from but he actually flew out mid-west to pick it and the following month drove out there and picked her up.
I do not know anyone that has one let alone heard of one. But from what I saw I am impressed at its temperament. He had that girl trained up very well and she worked just like any GSP/EnglishP. Any thoughts?

the jersey sporting dogs website states
"One thing to remember about this easy going, sensitive breed is that they require an owner that uses gentle training methods. This breed will not handle the heavy handed training procedures that some breeds are better suited for. Once they understand what it is that you want them to do, they will do it just to make you happy. That goes for in the field as well as in the home. All of our Braque Francais are house dogs. "
Awww, sounds like our Vizslas.
(Not that I'm partial or anything)

The Brittany evolved withthe peasants of that area and there is no history of what is in their background other than the neighbors dogs that hunted.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Braque du Bourbonnais- the other French Pointer
The Braque du Bourbonnais (brock-do-bor-bon-NAY) is one of the most ancient French pointers originally out of Bourbon, a region of central France. The breed was already known in 1598 as a dog skillful at hunting quail

Re: Who has a braque francais ?
I should add that no I don't have one. For some reason I just find these little known gentle pointers interesting and will consider them for my next dog. Although I do lean a bit more towards the hard headed Germans.
Re: Who has a braque francais ?
I first read about this breed around 20 years ago. I fancied one strongly and wondered why the Germans had bothered to invent the G.S.P. when this breed already existed. After enquiries I was told that his breed had not been developed with dealing with large game or with vermin killing in mind , the G.S.P. had been developed to deal with these in addition to its other duties. The G.S.P. is ,supposedly, a "tougher" dog.
I still fancied the French breed but could not find a single one in Britain at that time...........I bought my first G.S.P. and have not been sorry. I have kept my interest in the French breed and have now been in touch with a man who has worked them. He confirms everything that has already been said here. A very keen and efficient pointing/retrieving breed but pity help you if you have a heavy hand - the dog will not accept that kind of training.
I have still to see one in the flesh !
