I have read the reasons for F.F. and I think I understand it's neccessity for your retriever test and trials. I do not know of one ,single British trainer who uses it however and certainly not on spaniels. My own cocker spaniels and the springer and the clumber spaniel I train for others just do not need it. They are all very keen retrievers of everything that falls and my problems lie mainly with persuading them to wait until they are commanded to retrieve !

Must admit I had made the obviously wrong assumption that American trial spaniels were also F.F. trained. I am pleased to read I was wrong. I don't think any gundog breed should need to be F.F. trained , for myself I am very happy to work with and, if neccesary, develop on what good breeding should have given a pup. The other reasons for training F.F. , reasons apart from retrieving, I cannot comment on , I don't have that kind of experience.
