Carded/hobbled pigeons

Post by scattergun » Sun Apr 27, 2008 11:31 am

How do you keep the pup from catching them? I know that can't be good. Tried one yesterday and my 11 week old DD pointed and held like a champ. I went in and flushed and she caught by the wing when it came down. She was very proud of herself and trotted off and was not about to bring me her prize. This can't be good to let a pup start catching birds. How do you prevent it? I train by myself and don't usually have a helper. Is a check cord and helper the only answer?

Thanks

check cord is how i did it. i have a launcher now and it is alot easier. course without something to bring them down, you need to be close to your coop so you can use them again.

Use a trap and a pigeon with a dog on a check cord...they will soon learn that if they get too close, the bird will fly...pointing should happen relatively quickly.

Why is it so bad to let an 11 week old pup catch a bird?

Not much of a big deal to let an 11 wk pup catch "A" bird. If you cause it to be a regular occurrence then it is a big problem.

Although a little cumbersome to use, these can be of assistance to the solo trainer.
