flying pigeons

Post by littleking » Mon Jul 07, 2008 8:42 am

started flying my pigeons this weekend... two of them came back and trapped themselves real well...

1 adult and 1 juvi came back but can't figure out how to trap themselves or go back in the flight pen door.... :(

i put some food/water out today and left the door open, hopefully they are back when i get home from work!

I lost 5 when i first flew mine...only 3 came back in the others stayed in the tree's and the ground...then came a big storm and i saw them no more...i set a cage up on the outside of my bobs and add the 3 i had left and would put their food in the coop then make them learn to come through the bobs...i did this for a couple days then let them out wit the bobs up and i haven't had any trouble...the are flying and trapping well....I need to get about 5 more YB and I am going to do the same thing with them.

Helps to spend a few days holding them outside the door, then letting them push their way thru the door to go in. Then they get a good idea what they are suppossed to do

Flew my hen that hatched a couple little ones last night. I caught her and put her through the bobs, then I caught her again and released her through the bobs. She only flew to the top of the coop and then to the side like let me back in. She then went around back and came right back in so actually a success I think. Will do it again tonight maybe let another one out with her.

A question for you. How long were your birds gone for before they came back. I let mine out last night at 8pm and this morning when I got home from work they were still not back yet. They all were sitting in a tree in the front yard.

couple hours, first time you fly them it could take a day or two to trap themselves...

have you pushed them through the bobs before?

If your pigeons are not going in as soon as they get back to their loft they are not hungry enough. Too fat, lazy, etc. Should not feed more than 1 oz per bird per day of a rich high protein food. Starve em a day or two before you release them again and see how that helps. Make sure they are fed as soon as they go in. Train in am feed in am. Train in pm feed in pm.

I have had fat pigeons stay away "tripping" a day or two I think they call it. Lot more to training a good homer than one thinks and fun too. make sure they get their baths at least one day per week. They love a hot bath.

I never leave the bobs down the first few times I fly them. The best way to train going through the bobs is have a small cage you can put them in and set it on the landing board so they have togo through the bobs to get back inside. After a couple of days they will be fine with the bobs and it will also give them a chance to look around so they will reconize the loft when they see it.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

I actually put the food down and then set her out. I figured that way she knows the food is there and really wants to get back. I have been leaving 2 bobs up so she kind fits in between, she has been out 3 times in the last week and back in within 15 minutes. I turned a different one loose one pm and haven't seen it since. Some others said to turn a first timer loose with the veteran and she will lead the others back not sure if that is true or not but pigeons love company. Oh yeah I haven't weighed how much I feed them but it is pretty clean every day.

They will eat 4 times what they need if they are alowed. If the feed is not gone in 10 minutes pick it up. Fed is the one key to starting pigeons and once you have that right you will have alot less problems. Even my race birds that have flown 100's of times "that will trap at anytime I whistle" will not come in if they are feed too much.

I also want to add that fat pigeons are not strong flyers, not good breeders, and are not healthy. Last week I took my birds on a long training toss and they did not get back for 6 hours. How many people have dog training birds that would fly for 6 hours? Mine eat 1 once a day per bird.

Tell us about the hot bath thing. Do you have a bird bath outside your loft or what? :?:

No bird bath. Use a 5 gallon bucket of hot (not scalding) water. Take pigeon in hand and dunk it in and shake it around once or twice. Then toss it back into the loft. Don't drown the sucker but give it a good dunk.

Good dunkin.

My birds take their own bath when they want one. No way am I going to catch every bird and dunk it but if you want to fo it sounds like they like it.

Are you measuring it out? How long have they been flying? Have you been whistling when you feed? Do all the bird fly right to the feed and eat it all right them when you do feed?
