e-collar around flank?
I have noticed several pictures where the dog has an e-collar around his flank. Do trainers use that to work on point intensity, to raise the dog up if he crouches when he points, ......what?

Re: e-collar around flank?
we use it as a point of contact for whoa...
I use the ruck smith method of whoa post to over lay a cue point for when needed
I can also be used for dogs that are low to cue them up

I use it on the flank for whoa. It doesn't make sense to have one cue mean several things, thus the cue to whoa is on the flank and recall is on the neck.

Seen it used to crouching and sitting problems. Timing is so crucial with this method, like all training with the e-collar, they seem to just be a little more sensetive about it, so extreme attention to detail must be maintained.
Re: e-collar around flank?
I use the CC hooked to a dog collar on the rear for beginning training and starting on STW. I may use the ecollar there later, or on the neck, but that is a good point of contact. When I teach Whoa I use the collar(not E) there for setting the dog back when teaching Whoa.

e-collar on the flank = electric brakes
e-collar on the neck = power steering
In both cases the e collar is used to OVERLAY each command that was originally taught with the check cord.

Re: e-collar around flank?
I think if you'll notice????? To properly train a dog you need a minimum of 20 foot of rope for steering.... An e-collar on the neck for here and turn... Then another collar on the rear end for stop, whoa, whoa. Then a tame bird or 2.. If done properly the dog will never hurt the bird and you can reuse them day after day....
Oh ya get a whistle also.... You'll need if you drop the rope and the batteries are dead on your e-collar.
So yes the collar on the rear end is for stop or WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAaaa! :puke:
Ryan.

Thank you very much for that informative and insightful post. I'm certain we all know quite a bit more now than we did before your post.

Re: e-collar around flank?
It's just a personal preference, and I'm not saying anyone else is wrong, but I use the collar strictly on the neck. From day one, the dog has worked with a collar on it's neck. Might be a leather collar, choke collar, pinch collar, but he's learned with a collar on his neck. Later, when he's a trained hunting dog, he'll work with a collar on his neck.
Therefore, I teach all commands more or less, through the neck. Here, sit, down, fetch, whoa, back, over. My own feeling is that a collar on the flank is very unnatural for a dog. He will never again work with that collar on his flank. I simply skip the flank and teach everything through the neck. They have to learn it sometime.
I will use a flank collar, but only if I'm having a real problem with a dog moving on whoa. Can't remember the last time I had that bad a problem. It's really a matter of preference. K-9 likes the flank, I like the neck, some are in between. No right, no wrong.

Re: e-collar around flank?
In my training, from day one I do use a collar on the rear. But not an ecollar. So transfer is easy. Checkcording is much easier, as it prevents excess pulling (just as the pinch collar) and it stops the dog on the chase very easily. I really rarely use the E collar there anymore, as I use it on the neck early on, but if I have a tuff dog on jumping in or any other situation I can easily transfer to the rear because that is an established point of contact for them. It works either way, just personal preference.

Re: e-collar around flank?
I use the e-collar around the flank, dogs start out with a pinch collar as the point of contact, then overlayed with the e-collar, then overlayed with the whoa. There is a great article that Rick Smith has in the JULY/AUGUST PDJ on this very topic, he has kind of changed things just a little in the whoa post training, the first part of this article was in the last PDJ, it's a great read, and heck there is a good looking shorthair on the cover to boot. (Wonder who that is? Any ideas Brenda?)

Yeah! Front cover (after discussing it with Artist Bob Bertram) is the dog in my Avater, and on the GDF logo. Archie. Bob had some pics I had given him and did not realize who he was when he did him.

Re: e-collar around flank?
The only time we @ BDK use the shock collar around a dogs flank is 1~ if the dog is bulling through it on his neck and we're not getting the reaction that we're looking for & 2.~ When we get in a dog that may have a crouching, lieing down or sitting problem. Have 1 dog in training right now that we just put the collar back on his neck after training with the collar around his flank for a few weeks. He responds much better now. haha. He and another were the first ones in some time that we'd had to put the collar on their flanks, our Dogtra 2 dog is pretty hot and generally gets their attention just around the neck but every now and then there is a hard headed/necked one. Haven't had any brought into us for some years that have had the crouching, lieing down or sitting problem when it comes to birds (and most of the sitting ones their owners had taught them when @ whoa they sat, not good thing especially if planning on the dog being a field trial dog).

Re: e-collar around flank?
I have always used the collar positioned one the neck but am considering trying the flank for an extremely obstanant dog i have. Where exactly do you postion the prongs on the dog? Do you position them on the side or on the belly?

underneath and also use lighter levels of stimulation
let the dog get used to the belly band before using it in a context that the dog has been trained to stand still
