Itching Dog

Post by poundpuppy » Mon Sep 01, 2008 7:28 pm

I have had my EP for 1 year now and I have tried everything to stop his itching. I have used raw food diet, medicated shampoos, prednisone, etc. I just finished another cycle of prednisone and switched him to duck and potato food on the vets recommendation. He does better on the meds but I don't want to keep giving him prednisone. Any other ideas?

You dog may have an allergy. We had a dog or two with allergies, and our vet prescribed Clemastine. It's an antihistamine for dogs. If your vet is having trouble finding the problem, you should probably think about getting a second opinion.

I agree about another opinion. This time you may want to find a specialist. There are veterinary dermatologists out there that can more accurately diagnose these problems.

Same here..I have a EP Female who scratches her neck until raw and bloody. Took her to the vet and stated I belived she had an allergy. Vet looked at me like I was crazy. Anyways despite the vet I started her on generic benydrayl and within a week or two it was completely cleared up. One daily will do.

we have had to deal with this for two consecutive early fall seasons now, again we let it get a little too far before taking her to the vet so our vet prescribed temeril p. they suggested giving her regular benedryl (no benedryl DECONGESTANT, D = death is what they said) next fall and that should may keep her from having such a reaction.

I sure wish you good luck with the dog.

After having allergy test, and a year of the most expensive medcine on the market the only thing that helped a little was prednisone. His test came back with a list of 23 items that he allergic too. Like pork, rice, barley, white potatoes, carrots, oak , maple, pecan, and walnut trees and on and on. He always had large scabs and sores from the digging and scratching.

He had the most prey drive I have ever seen and promised to be a great dog. His suffering was more than I and he could stand.
