short days

Post by Casper » Sun Nov 13, 2005 11:39 pm

With the days so short now I was wondering how I can impliment training in the dark.

I go to work when the sun is rising and come home after it is dark.

How can I still effectivly train with out light?

I am in the middle of whoa training and need to see in order to correct the pup.

Should I work on something else and work on whoa when I can?

Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Do what you can near a house with lights, or even inside the house. Obviously you can't plant birds behind the sofa or anything, but you can reinforce basic yard work inside. It may take a couple times to translate the command outdoors, but it will cut down training time and it's better than no training at all.

I've been pretty lucky about getting mornings off, so I get my dog out with no worry of limited daylight. Therefore, take my advice with a grain of salt. :D

Parks with basketball or tennis courts (these are usually lighted down here) can be used for yard and retrieving work. Little league fields can aslo be used.

You can't plant birds behind the couch. You must live in one of those fancy houses. :D

have the same problem. if you are still working on the yard work part of whoa training, go to Menard's or Home Depot or whatever home improvement place you have in your area and buy a halogen work light. You can get the kind that sit on a tripod, extend up to about 5 feet, and have two lamps, for not very much money. get an extension cord also. it is all the light you will need for yard work.

they light up quite a large area, and work well for yard work.

have not ever tried it for bird work in a field, and i can see where there could be problems. among other things, the dog would learn to go to the light for birds. this time of the year, we are hunting, and do the training while out hunting. if we feel a need for a little bird work, we do it on weekends.

Hmmm, that's why I got rid of the husband.....he got in the way of my hunting and bird dog training! Told me no more Weimaraners, and I said okay, got a puppy and kicked him out to make room for more dogs. :)
Been the best hunting season this year with him gone. :)
So, there, boys! That can work both ways!
No quail behind my couch. I did have a sore back this morning, and had to push the pheasant wings out of the way to pull an ice pack out of the freezer.
Build a small barn. My quail cage is doing great up in the hay loft.

I'll buy that -- I know it does work both ways in some instances.
