Northeast Illinois trainer recommendation?
Northeast Illinois trainer recommendation?
Hello all-
I'm thinking of sending my 3 year old Britanny to a trainer for a month or so this summer. I live in Chicago...Does anyone know of a good recommendation for a trainer? She needs to get touched up on a few things and I think some really dedicated time would help. Also, since I travel a lot, she is used to the boarding process.
1. Am I too late in trying to find someone?
2. Is there a ballpark price that trainers charge for their services? I know everyone is different and I'm assuming I pick up all food costs. Just looking at a ballpark price.
Thanks all....
Eric

Eric, Tom at Dale Creek is just north of you across the WI/IL border. He has a lot of IL clients for training and boarding. He is a great trainer for the pointing breeds (labs too )
Give him a call and leave your info on his machine. Shoot me a PM if you want more info on them. His rates are on his site.

Jack Peppers at Morrison IL does a great job with hunting dogs and specializes in gunshy dogs. Breeds some good Shorthairs too.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Chad Holman 618-629-2175 is in Whttington, IL south of you. A month is not long enough to get results, plan on at least 3 at $350.00 a month.

Re: Northeast Illinois trainer recommendation?
I would have to definitely second Chad Holman. He has trained a couple national champion britts and have to agree that one month isn't enough. Send him for the rest of the summer if you're going to send him to a trainer.
Re: Northeast Illinois trainer recommendation?
The Holman's have trained a lot of good trial dogs over many years but they are a long way from NE Illinois. Bob Burchett is a lot closer if you are looking for a field trial trainer and even he is a 4 hour drive from the Chicago area. Holmans are a good 5 to 6 hour drive from up here. There are a lot of good hunting dog trainers a lot closer and probably a lot cheaper.nowicki2005 wrote:I would have to definitely second Chad Holman. I certainly wouldn't let a 5 or 6 hour drive discourage me from using a trainer. Find the best trainer you can afford within a reasonable distance and take your dog. I agree that you should consider 3 months. Remember, this dog will give you pleasure for the next several years...an extra few hours on the road is nothing my opinion if you find the right trainer.
Re: Northeast Illinois trainer recommendation?
I agree but more often than not the right or good trainer is a lot closer than some name you hear about because he had a National Champion out of the hundreds of dogs he has for training. All I am saying is 6 hrs each way on the road is considerable if there just happens to be a trainer that is just as good close by. I think I would base my decision on what I wanted the dog to learn and then look for a trainer who has had success in that area. And hopefully you can find one close by.bossman wrote:I certainly wouldn't let a 5 or 6 hour drive discourage me from using a trainer.
