If you had to choose between Northern Bobwhites or Tennesee Reds for training which would it be?

Will you be raising the birds as well? I ask because my wife's uncle who raises them and also trains dogs uses reds. When i asked him why he used reds, he said that they lay eggs everyday and are more accessible to him. I don't see much of a difference in them I think they fly the same. That's the only experience I have with either of them.

My friend is thinking about raising them. She raises other birds including Coturnix for the meat trade but has been getting calls from dog trainers. I suggested the Reds because they seem to have quite a bit more spunk and fewer difficulties keeping them in stock. Coturnix are easy to raise in large numbers but are terrible fliers and have a very low scent, which is good and bad I suppose. Hunters just don't want them for training.

Reds they seem to fly better & do better on early release may be a little smaller but i think they are tougher JMO

I've always heard Reds were faster, hardier, and flew farther and at an earlier age than do the northern bobs. Never hunted any nor raised any but am considering raising some myself if I can get set up to do it this coming summer. Thinking about using some for training and some for release onto the ranch I hunt to boost the bobwhite population. I would choose Reds myself.

The best quail I ever saw for training were Valley Quail. Never used Tenn, Reds but have used coturnix and hated them, lousy flyer's. But this past fall I was talking with a guy that has been raising Bob's for a long time and he switched coturnix. He says they fly great and his word I would take. He raises them in a flight pen he cultivates with cover crop ever year before they go in there. Well I believe him but I've had to much good luch with Bob's and Valley quail to try Coturnix ever again.

BE careful with that assumption, I have heard guys say that they are not game birds so you can do what you want with them but I'm not sure that is true. Tennessee reds are a color mutation of Bobwhites, scientifically they are the same species of quail.

the local DNR have given us no trouble as of yet.been stopped and "worked over" several times by different ones and never had that problem.not to say that i wont.it is possible i guess.as usual it is just another "grey area" that could be twisted several ways.I'll cross that bridge when i get there.
