Depends on the dog's background.
Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.

since i finally have gotten over to my new job and all of that i have the time i can finally start trialing so i am wondering if it would be better to get her trained or to get a already broke dog trying to figure out witch way will be better and witch way i will get the most out of my money. from the looks of it i might be able to get a fully trained dog cheaper then i can get her trained for.

I got a line on a cheap broke dog, give me a call and I can get you the guys number. You could take it out and compete today with it.

Describe what she does around birds to indicate she has no interest in birds. Has she had too much control put on her when she is around birds? Does she blink or shy away from birds?

If she is that close to being fully broke it may be worth while to let her spend a month or two with a good trainer. I would have her evaluated by a knowledgable field trialer as to weather she has the drive to be a competition dog before you send her to finish her training.

If your looking to compete with her get her evaluated like AZ said other wise it might be more cost efficient to get a broke dog.

I would think in Kansas you should have no problem finding someone. In my opinion, if you have a dog,(regardless of age) that will hold through flush, and is crazy about birds, a good pro should be able to finish it up with no problem. The competition dog has range, independance and lotsa of heart. If she shows any of those trates, a good pro should be able to get her ready for competition.

I think you should send her to me for the next couple of years and I'll work with her...after that I would say enough is enough... :P In reality, no, she is not to old. Sounds like you could finish her; however, a pro may be able to do it quicker so you could enjoy her more.

Another suggestion: Follow the link below, click on field trials, click on the state i.e. Kansas then look at the field trials close to you. Call the field trial chairman or secretary who's ph. number should be listed. Ask them for recommendations on who to talk to or.....go to the trial, find out who the patriarch is, go find them and pick their brain. They should be happy to help.

yea i am planning on going to a akc and nstra trial before i send her off or try and do it myself. i am running her in a AF trial on the 21st in the gun dog stakes that topher is putting on. if she runs big enough i might just stick with that but i doubt she will just if i could run her off of my 4 wheeler then she would run big enough with no problem.

SJ,

The Sunflower GSP club has a walking trial in Howard, Kansas in 2 weeks. I think that's about 2 hours or less from you. Hope to see you there!
