Seeking your recommendations re: which training book
I have had Labs for the last 40 years or so and am wanting to get a GSP or GWP.
Which book(s) would you recommend as the best re: training a GSP?

For what do you wish to train your dog? Strictly upland hunting? Versatile work? Testing or trialing?
Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.

The NAVHDA Green Book is still a classic and still very good. I like the Orange book as well. It is more involved, but more up to date.
LIFE WITHOUT BIRD DOGS AND FLY RODS REALLY ISN'T LIFE AT ALL.
Re: Seeking your recommendations re: which training book
I should have been more specific: I want to train solely for hunting upland and ducks.
Thanks again

The NAVDHA Green Book, available through their website,or Chuck Johnson's Training the Versatile Hunting Dog.

Both good. If you get the Green Book, I would highly recommend getting the DVD along with it as well. You'll see Bodo Winterheldt (founder of NAVHDA) training some basics.Cajun Casey wrote:The NAVDHA Green Book, available through their website,or Chuck Johnson's Training the Versatile Hunting Dog.

for any pointing dog training I'd go with Mark's book "Favorite ways to train your bird dog" its simple easy to understand plenty of pic's (lord knows most men need pic's to stay interested) and there are 2-4 different ways to teach the basics its a great read.

A Perfect Start and A Perfect Finish are excellent. They are DVD's.

A good book that deals with dog behavior is Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson. It will help you understand how dogs think and react to training. With this knowledge you will be able to understand what makes a good training program.http://www.georgehickox.com/about_georg ... icles.html Check this link these are published training articles by george hickox.

Longarm, what level did you train your Labs to? - if it was anything competitive, and that's where your expectations are with your new GSP, be advised that the pointing dog books won't go into a fraction of the detail for what retriever training entails. I said details about "training," people, not "pet whisperer" mumbo-jumbo (or, er, "singing" to your pointers). Though as GH and someone else noted, Training the Sporting Dog is a solid bet that spans the gamut for what you're looking to do with a GSP. But I would augment it, if you have familiarity with training Labs to handle, with Volume 1 of Mike Lardy's articles written for Retriever Journal, and also Evan Graham's work (Evan's been giving seminars to NAVHDA chapters for a while now).longarm wrote:I should have been more specific: I want to train solely for hunting upland and ducks.

Now that I've decided to train my own, I'm going to get some of these books as well.
