Hi Everybody!

Just wondering - if you were to point out 10 essential things you'd like to know about gun dog training - what would that be?

Thanks for response

I don't have a clue how to answer this. I suppose the main things are what to do and when to do them but that is only two things

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

#1. Patients, don't rush or force it. Let the dog progress at it's own pace.
#2. Read the dog and always stop the training session when you get too frustrated.
#3. Make it fun "when possible" . There will always be those high pressure days. I will let them run in the birdfield or coarse with no birds depending on what I'm focussing on.
#4. Wild bird hunt them if possible.
#5. Work them on birds individually. Do not run or train them with other dogs until they are broke on birds. It seems that they only pick up the bad habits.

I will stop here and see if anybody else has something they would like to add. I tried :) .

Might want to reword the question because no one who trains gundogs ever believes they don't know something. :)

Wrong.

You know you want one!

The tail doesn't find the birds!

1-800-BOBTAILS for a good time. (I have no idea what that number is to, but I don't suggest calling it for real.)

I do believe you quoted the wrong post:D

The tail makes it easier to keep track of where they dip over the horizon

I looked hard at a few GSP litters before pulling the trigger on Turbo...

I did. I'm crazy like that!

You'll have to borrow my Derby boy, Oakie this fall. He runs head and tail up and points with some crank. I taught him that with liver!

Seriously, had him at the club after the trial Sunday and he got up a woodcock down in the creek. Closed his 250 yards right up to 50 to work the coverts. Pretty cool to watch.

You know where to find me. We may look for those woodcock again this week, then it'll be libby quail at the club or up at the trainers. STR trials at the club on the 26th and the second weekend of April, I think.

Shhh everyone knows field trial dogs don't sleep on the couch when they come home. She goes straight to an ... UNpadded kennel outside. And she sleeps out there too!
