When training starts to "click"

Post by britspan » Mon Mar 28, 2011 9:23 pm

Does anyone else run into one random day when your dog finally seems to start understanding everything? Today was the first day my 11 month old Brittany seemed to "click". She held point on some birds I planted, stopped tossing the birds around when retrieving, and brought them directly back when retrieving (due to a very strong "here" command). I tried to attach a picture of her on point.

A guy can be having a really bad day and if his dog starts putting everything together on that particular dy, it can go from a bad day to a good day real quick!

I tell you what though, I sure was in an excellent mood the rest of the day. I was bragging to all my hunting buddies so I had to boast a little on here! :D

Just started training my French Britt female.
Five years old (I'm thirteen, don't bash D: )
I'll let you know when she clicks..
Wit is a sword; people are meant to feel the point as well as see it.

I live in Arizona and have the privilege of getting into the training field 2 - 3 times per week with a professional gun dog trainer. His training program traditionally only last three months. We tend to notice that for the first month the dogs are getting acclimated to their new surroundings and a new handler. Half way through month 2 something clicks in all of them. They begin holding their birds while on point, standing staunchly while the bird is flushed. All dogs are different and respond to pressure a little differently so in some cases they don't come around until month 3. The main thing to remember is to be patient and have fun!
