Need a 3rd whistle

Post by Shimmie » Sun Jun 12, 2011 7:57 pm

All,
In this photo are the two whistles i'm currently using in the field. the metal one still has a pea and the red one doesn't. they call my hawk. this year i'm adding an english pointer to the hunt. i'm looking for a third whistle that won't call the bird to me but can be used to call an english pointer.

does anyone know of a whistle that might do this?

Thanks!

From how far away do you anticipate calling your dog? A couple of options come to mind, the first being a "thunder" coach's whistle and the second being a shepherd's half moon. The latter is the devil to learn to use, but it has a lot of options.

that is pretty much the type of whistle i'm using for the bird. other falconers are using morse code so that the hawk responds to one set of signals and the dog another.

i was thinking something along the lines of a odd tone. maybe an elk mating call or something.

With a Pointer stay away from the metal whistles. You don't want to break your teeth when you bite down in aggravation. :)

That's just stupid.

Many modern plastics are harder than the cheap metal they make whistles out of...

yeah, treats are not so interesting to him. he just wants to scurry up game. i'm thinking to hire a day laborer to do the chasing. :?

i'm not sure if i said that i had already dedicated two whistles to something else i'm taking in the field and these CAN NOT be used for the dog. one is a metal acme thunder w/ pea and the other is a plastic Ron Gonia imitation w/o a pea. so no whistles that may be confused with these two may be used. i'd rather loose the dog than risk loosing the other
