Hand signals-how do you teach them ?

Post by K9luke » Mon Aug 08, 2011 7:54 pm

I am ready to start my youngest dog on hand signals for blind retrieves.
I have taught two dogs hand signals in the past and did "ok" but could have done better I think.
I used the baseball method. Is there a better way ?
If not are there any tricks to polish them up ?

What's the baseball method ? :)

I use the signal when the dog's already doing it.They learn quickly that way. I want him to turn left at the barn say, so when he looks back, I give a high pointing left hand signal.

I used the baseball diamond method when training my last lab and it worked great. He picked it up quick. I don't know if there is another method but I don't think you can go wrong with it either.

If you're talking about a retriever, then yes, the baseball diamond is the best method.

Hand signals is just the start of having a handling gundog. Retriever pups start three-handed casting (and sometimes walking baseball) at 12-14 weeks old. The real handling skills come from working with and through a program - if you're interested in going that far with it, get the materials recommended above.
