new guy needs advice

Post by redneck17 » Wed Sep 28, 2011 7:32 am

hey y'all just signed up yesterday. Have a GSP/English Pointer mix Ive been trying to train up. about 18 months old. problem is, he's picked up some really bad habits and has severe seperation anxiety. still jumps up on folks some, and when fetching toys, he likes to drop them about 10-15 feet away from me. and to top it off, he loves to break loose from the house and run off for hours at a time. Would like some suggestions on this. Thanks.

NILIF and cheese.
Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.

+1 winchey but isn't that what he gets when he runs out of the house!

lol sure is, but I think he should be going with him. If he had more excercise and outlets I think that behaviour would be less frequent or eliminated and the dog would be more manageable and easier to work with. I think it would help with the seperation anxiety as well, but not eliminate it.

How old is this dog? Sounds like a pretty young dog.

Taking off and running like that could be the pup still in him and could be the pointer blood or a combination of both. You never can be sure just what will pop up in mixed breeding. You probably will have to get and learn to use an E-Collar to get a handle on him now.

And learn how to use it properly and don't be afraid to use whatever it takes. Make sure he knows you are the boss. They can certainly test you and you have to be committed, and then sometimes one decides that they are just too much dog [not saying that is you...just say'n] Having said that, he sounds like a pretty typical 18 mo. old bird dog pup.

Put him on a leash and train him. He doesn't need exercise, he needs obedience. There is absolutely NO excuse for him jumping on people and running off. Keep him leashed until you have control of him.
LIFE WITHOUT BIRD DOGS AND FLY RODS REALLY ISN'T LIFE AT ALL.
