darn squirrels

Post by sandhillsgsp » Sat Oct 15, 2011 10:59 am

I could use some thoughts here. In our yard we have a good number or trees and along with that squirrels. They love to mess with the dog. Let her get close enough, then bolt up a tree. Or, hang in a tree just over her head. This has caused he to become obsessed with them squirrels, at least in the yard. We don't see any out in the field so its not a problem there. But, in the yard she would probably choose the squirrels over her favorite treat. Sometimes when giving the "come" command she will blow me off if she's locked on a squirrel in a tree. However, she is great with "come" in any other instance. Question is...how do i address this? Do i make the squirrels a negative?
Thanks ahead of time...

I personally would shoot them suckers and eat them.

I loved when my dog just figured out treeing squirrels easy hunting.

But I am cajun

I'm with Cajun, why take away the dogs toys? That's all they are. If she had a stuffed toy that was as much fun she would blow you off because of that till you get her trained.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

My 3 love the squirrels too , but it doesn't affect them when hunting. Good exercise. We have a 300 + oak tree on our property that houses racoons. They don't appear until dark so they can be a problem for the dogs.

I agree, let her have her "Toys" it probably isnt hurting anything and it gives them something to do.

BUT, I would take the oppertunity to teach her that she is to NEVER blow off a command! Think of it in terms of, she see's a squirrel crossing a road. You call, she has been conditioned that she can ignore you, and BLAMO!!!! no more dog.
Get a collar on her or whatever you use and get on her about that recall!

This would be my advice. Sounds to me like the perfect training opportunity. I'd make her heel too. If you're able, I'd command whoa and shoot one for her. Make her stay at whoa until you decide it's time for her to retrieve it.
