bumping birds

Post by Croix » Sat Oct 29, 2011 8:12 pm

I have a year old Setter. He has more drive/energy then he knows what to do with. Was out today and made contact with 13 grouse. The problem is he is so excited that he gets to close and bumps them, and let's out a little bark when they flush. On liberated/planted birds he is solid!
Should I be worried or will he figure it out? If not, what should I work on with him?

Thanks in advance

Are you letting him chase too? First thing I do with a dog like that is to make sure they are steady to flush.
LIFE WITHOUT BIRD DOGS AND FLY RODS REALLY ISN'T LIFE AT ALL.

If he knows how to point and collar conditioned the second you see him get bird nick him and stop him... if he knows stop to flush and doesn't stop then do the same until he stops. Should not treat him different then if he was on planted birds..

Don't think I would recommend an inexperienced trainer to use a collar to stop a dog from bumping a bird. Wouldn't even advise a pro to do it. There is a period of time centered on the dog first smelling a bird and ending when he starts chasing that is very delicate as far as using the e-collar if you don't want the dog to start blinking and avoiding birds all together.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

How many grouse has he been on, and has he ever pointed one?
