Good Training Day!

Post by VizslaGirl » Sun Dec 04, 2011 5:02 pm

We took Cali and Robby out to work some birds with a friend this morning. Just a few fun shots from our session.

Loved the pics. :D I've got a question I've often thought of asking but never have. What are all the collars for ? Are they GPS and e-collar and plain but coloured collar or do they have other functions ? It is rare in my country to see dogs being worked with any kind of collar on.

I've got no quarrel with any of collars, I would just like to know for sure what they do. I have never even seen a GPS collar on a dog here but I have often wished my dogs wore one !

I.D collar

e-collar

GPS/ beeper collar probably.

I put ID on the e-collar so i could get rid of one collar.

It's a good question -

Cali, the female, is wearing her normal ID collar (the teal one), an e-collar and a "flash" or high-viz collar. All my dogs always wear an ID cfollar, just too lazy to take it off. Cali was wearing the e-collar because we were specifically training for Master Hunter level honors (standing through the flush, shot and retrieve) and it was our first time trying that. My dogs always wear flash collars in the field - easier to see the otherwise invisible red dogs.

Robby doesn't work with an e-collar, so he's just wearing his normal collar and a flash collar.

Thanks for the collar info. The vizsla pup I am training at present for a friend also wears a collar but it is just an identity disc collar. According to British law dogs must wear these but working dogs are exempt since it is felt a dog working in cover might get caught up. None of my own dogs have ever had a collar around their necks.

Very often while working Brits and GSP's I have wished they were wearing a GPS collar , I can easily see how that kind of collar could save me a lot of worries.
Thanks again.

Vizslagirl, I see you are from Atlanta. I don't know if you are new with the vizsla breed, so forgive me if I am giving information you already know. Atlanta has an excellent and active vizsla club. I was fortunate to meet some of the members when I was down at a hunt test in Kentucky last year. Check them out if you haven't already done so.

You could live without a dog, but it would not be worthwhile.

The high vis red and yellow are the same type collars we used to put on dogs at a field trial. Red was top dog. Helped tell them apart in the field. I don't have a GPS collar, to rich for my blood and I also wean my dogs off the e-collar. They usually run with only their leather collar with name tag and phone #.

Thanks for mentioning it!

I'm actually an active member and soon to be in charge of membership for the club. I agree - it's a pretty great club! We have wonderful officers who really spend a lot of time making sure everything is going according to plan. I'm glad you got to meet some of the members and that you remember the club!
