actual "hunt" command help

Post by trigger1989 » Sun Dec 11, 2011 11:08 pm

I have a 11 month old gsp pup. Done pretty with all parts of training so far except retrieving but force fetching is probably in his near future. Anyways, he has a good nose but when I plant birds or take him out to the river bottom beind my house ( A LOT of wild quail but in city limits so no hunting) to get him on some wild birds I don't think he realizes that we are hunting. From what I see he's just having a good time running and jumping over stuff until he sees a quail then points. Not so much nose to ground trying to find quail. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

All of what your pup is doing is a part of hunting. He is hunting, he just does not yet know what. The more he finds birds the more focused his efforts will be.

My hunt command is letting them off the lead or releasing from heal with an Okay. That's it.

He is hunting. You don't want the pup to have the nose to the ground. With the head up he is hunting body scent but with the nose down he is scenting tracks and that is not the way to find birds.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Be glad your pup doesn't have his nose to the ground. Be glad your pup is "running" around. Most well bred and exposed pups do not need a "hunt" command, they need a quit hunt command. Hunt is just what they do.

I've always used "hunt em up" to tell the dogs when it's time to do business. I do prefer to keep them at heel until time to release them. Add to this the gun and gear, and they figure it out pretty quickly.
Two cannibals were eating a clown. One looks up at the other and says, "Does this taste funny to you?"

Don't use a "hunt" commanad. Juse give him a release command and go.

Sounds good guys, thanks. This is my first dog I'm training/hunting with so I wasn't sure.

Enjoy the ride; Watch that pup. Watch his body language you will start noticing certain mannerisms when he is working bird or other quarry. That pup can teach you some stuff. Pay attention and keep quiet. You will see your pup learn before your vary eyes.

I would also add that you seem to have worked your dog on planted bird drills a lot. As a result he is not used to 'hunting' for birds outside of the training area. I would slow way down on drills and let him learn to hunt wild birds. He will figure it out pretty quickly.

Your doing well, just keep getting him on wild birds and they will teach him almost everything he needs to know about being a bird dog.
