This is kind of a spin off from my previous post, but I wanted to see what guys thought.....

What do you guys prefer between the Dokken Dead Fowl dummies and the newer Avery True Bird ATB dummies.

For me it really depends on the situation. I love dokkens as their feel is closer to a bird. The averys are more of a hard plastic with grooves for better grip and IMO better for water work as they Do not retain water if damaged. The dokkens on the other hand are made from a latex high density foam (or something similar) that allows the dog to get a nice grip, and still simulate the density of a real bird.

In short

Avery pros:
Flashers available
Good for water
Grooves for gripping

Dokken pros:
"real" feel
Expansive collection to choose from
Easy to scent

Avery cons:
Hard plastic feel
Unable to hold scent well

Dokken cons:
Will retain water if used with any frequency

I only normally use three object's in retrieve training. First I use a canvas bumper filled with kpoc. Next I got to a frozen bird and finish up with a fresh killed bird. If I'm forcing add one more. Hardwood dowel, usually a broken hammer handle.
I pity the man that has never been loved by a dog!

Training with birds really is the way to go... I carry the dead fowl only in case I get off work in time to head out to our spot to train, as I am in a position where my dogs are welcomed at my work.
