Too Cold For Training

Post by bb560m » Sat Feb 11, 2012 8:26 am

9deg (feels like -1deg) with a light snow coming down. How cold is too cold to train? By the time I get out to field it should be about 15deg, should be fine. What is the coldest you would train in?

About 25* but no wind. We get a lot of it here and it make even 40* bitter!
I pity the man that has never been loved by a dog!

I think the wind is a much bigger issue than the actual cold temp. I took the dogs out this morning and it was about 6F out. Not a problem until the wind started to pick up. I have more problem with heat when training.

Wind chill -15 here today. The dogs didn't seem to mind, but we watch that their favorite parts don't get frozen :D

It's in the teens here in Pittsburgh right now. I think hunting or training on birds would be ok, but I just went out to try and do some yard work, and my pup was glued to my hip and definitely did not want to stand in one place for very long. Gonna be colder with subzero wind-chills soon.

The cold isnt a problem for the dogs its just if you can handle being out in the cold. I for one hate being out in the cold!!

Its never too cold. I have been out in the field with -20 temps. Why just today I went with a friend to look at a motorcycle. He bought it, I rode it home for him, Told him I aint no city boy. Keep the dogs outside, they perform better in cold than a inside dog Dad always told me. My wife wont let me put the one year old out tho,,, sleeps in the bed with her... she works nites and sleeps when I am at work.

Dont think ambient temperature is the real issue if you can stand it the dog probably can too. I think wind and the amount of ice and snow are more the problem. The dog will show signs if they are too cold, holding feet of the ground and shivering are good indicators that you should pay attention too. Here where I live I have worked my Labs at 0 degrees and even below zero though usually for short periods and not alot of sitting during the sessions.

+1....went out yesterday with my pup for a bit....when we started it was 34 f and we hunted for about 2 hours. When we got done the temp was 26 f. The lil guy was still going strong and having a blast but I was the one who wussed out. Didnt bring gloves and couldnt feel my fingers anymore...hahahaha.

I have no where to put this so I'm putting it here.:)
It was -6 degrees Celsius here yeasterday ,but we went out anyway.

I saw a Indigo Bunting and a group of Buffleheads and a Bald Eagle. Very glad i went out. The Bunting is a once in a life time sighting.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.
