video of young pup learning on loose quail

Post by C.painter » Tue Apr 24, 2012 7:53 am

So I thought this was good video of showing why loose quail are so good for young pups to learn before heading to launcher work.

Ellie, my french brit pup is a little under 3 1/2 months old and this is only her second time out on live birds.

In this video you see her begin to learn the difference between fresh scent and bird present, and fresh scent with no bird present. She points where I had planted the bird but the bird had wandered off. She also works on tracking the bird, then she heads back down wind to begin hunting back into the wind, at which point she is rewarded with a full snout of quail. And finally she learns that chasing is unsuccessful!! This will help further build the pointing instinct for her. I stayed back and zoomed in to capture the action, but kept the action between the dog and the bird.

I love this video as you can see her working it out in her head as she goes along. Love the style of her locking, head high puffing the sweet aromas of quail. I am tickled pink!! :D

You bet she's getting it, even with all the wind. Pup's getting birdy.

Awesome video!!

Great video. Watching them figure it out on there own is a lot of fun. That pup also quickly taught that bird to fly or die!

That is funny. Oh sheet.

With the West system (Mo Lindley, Bill Gibbons, etc.) it's desireable for a young pup to catch a few - just stokes the prey drive. I think it was Mo who said the pup is "establishing providence over the bird." None after the first few, but a live bird or two in mouth early on is a good thing. Ellie girl above looks right on track!!

I was watching a dvd of Bill Gibbons the other day and he was explaining that's how he gets rid of his crappy flying pigeons - uses them carded for bird intro with pups..and they don't make it out.

Thanks Guys! There is aways a risk in catching a bird, luckily none have been caught so far. If one gets caught I will treat it as a non-event, but don't want to repeat it. I think the pup is learning way too much versus pigeons in traps right now. So kind of risk reward thing.

Catching a few at that age will build his drive like az said . It just reminded me of that video I thought was funny.

Man that was one quick Setter!!

I had to look all OVER to find quail and luckily when I was traveling for business I found a guy that sold me a dozen of his breed stock of Jumbo bobwhites. Not my ideal choice as I don't think they are as good of fliers as the smaller bobwhites, but take what I can get. They are decent enough from the 4 I have used so far.

Took her again last night through the same area but didn't plant any birds. She was hunting VERY well now. Working along the fenceline she locked up hard. I walked up and she was pointing where something had eaten one of the quail I had released :-)

TM79 keep me posted on your pup!!
