come when she called off cc
will i need a little help i'm try to get my pup to come to the here command off the cc all the time no matter what, thats the only command i really care about for now to come when called we have worked on the here command a little almost everyday, lately when we go on our happy time run in the woods i take the check cord off and let her work because pretty tough to run a dog in the northwood of minnesota on a check cord just gets caught on everything with me on the other end, at first i just let her drag the cc but think she could get hung up somewhere if she takes off.i think she found her bird brain in the last few weeks so when she runs the woods she does not lesson all of the time once in awhile she gets out of range (thick cover pretty small range) for awhile where a can't see her or hear her(not running a beeper or bell) i start to worrie and call her to come, takes awhile but she comes back, hunting the whole way.do i need to over lap my cc training the here command, with the e collar? also i don't want to use the e collar if i can't see the dog right? btw i'm very happy how she works the cover for a dog her age (6 months old) she works thick cover like a pro all i want is when she get out of range is to come when she is called. alot of the time she checks to see where i'm at but sometimes with bird brain she forgets i'm there i think. she runs most the time on a whisle one toot she check with me to see where i'm at or where i'm heading i just want to trust her to come then called i would make letting her run even around the yard alot nicer and safer! any input would be nice
Re: come when she called off cc
You sound like you are ready for the e collar and know the plan.
"Do i need to over lap my cc training the here command, with the e collar ?: yes
"i don't want to use the e collar if i can't see the dog right?'' Right . dog could be on point.
I recommend you get a good e collar with a beeper. Expensive but you will use the beeper often to locate your dog , rather than call her all the way in.
I use the Dogtra 2500 B/T. Great system.

Agree with Sharon's post...and while you are giving reps with CC and ECollar together, vary the terrains, covers, and places. Pup needs to know that "here" is "here" no matter the location.
Sounds like a a great pup! Be sure to resist the urge to "overhandle" - if being in dense cover causes you to call her in more, you might consider running her some more in less dense cover until you have more confidence in her. Remember at 6 months and for the next few, she WILL blow you off on occasion.
Dense cover with bird scent is an extremely "high distraction" environment. If "here" is what you are working on, make sure she has mastered it in numerous "lower distraction" environments first.

See if you can find a thread on "De-bolting". It's lengthy and I'm getting tired of posting it. That's the plan you need though.

i thought that very same thing but was worried i would have a dog that wanted to run the trail and not in the woods which seems common around these parts so ive been training in areas that i would hunt in the future at first when we started these happy time walks i walked in the thick cover with the pup to gain confidance in the pup now i walk the trail the dog works the cover thats how it suppose to work right? i'm i a little leary of working lots of birds in a field thinking the dog might think thats where the birds are, not true about ruffed grouse anyway which will be 95% of the game we will chase. i'm i out in left field here, our does some of my ideas have merit? i guess i wouldn't call it bolting,i just call it bird brain and she still a pup right

She doesn't have to be a bolter to benefit from a debolting program.

You need to ask yourself " why do I need this dog to come here.".i think she found her bird brain in the last few weeks so when she runs the woods she does not lesson all of the time once in awhile she gets out of range (thick cover pretty small range) for awhile where a can't see her or hear her(not running a beeper or bell) i start to worrie and call her to come, takes awhile but she comes back, hunting the whole way.do i need to over lap my cc training the here command, with the e collar?
I know it may be difficult, but you need to let that dog roll. You do not need to see it all the time. The only time I tell my dog "here" is to give her water and when we get near the car/truck, aka, we are done running.

When i got my first britt and first gun dog i was worried about her not coming when called in the field if i could not see her and the best advice i got came from an old field trial guy Randy Selleck, He said let her do her job she is not running from you she is hunting for you.
Re: come when she called off cc
I think she may be a little to young to expect her to come to you when highly distracted in the field.
How much training have you done with the HERE command on the check cord?
How consistant is she on the check cord?
What kind of praise does she get when she comes to you.

Re: come when she called off cc
At first i started in the house when she was young just calling her and giving her a treat and praise.we worked the here command quiet a bit with short sessions on the check cord she get a pat or two every time she is called even if i have to pull the check cord if she come all the way by herself she gets alot of praise. i don't like the idea of using the command more than once but as long as she is being corrected with the cc at the same time as the command is given, this is alright? she really not that great on the check cord, off lead when called sometime she about runs me over coming to me.MikeB wrote:I think she may be a little to young to expect her to come to you when highly distracted in the field.

will my pups doing the same thing I started overlap with the e collar and am making great progress. I also get worried when I can't she ruby. YOU just have to trust the dog. She bonds with you everyday she knows that yourher owner. Get a beeper thats what I did and put my mind at ease just to hear where she was.
Re: come when she called off cc
I use the whistle. 2 toots and hand signal to come then a treat and praise. I did this starting at 8 weeks, now at 5 mounths she come every time she hears 2 toots. I use the hand signal in the house it is not as loud. Good luck.
