Just the basics, heel, sit, come, stay (optional some people like to use it some dont), fetch. Let the pup be a pup for awhile before you start off on more training. Try not to do the trainings for very long, example - work on come for 15 min a day maybe twice a day and try to keep it fun so it doesnt feel like a chore for the pup.

Just basic obedience commands - here, sit, name, down, no, kennel
Remember you are teaching so no corrections, just help the pup do it and lots of praise when done correctly.

to come whn called - use treats off and on.

Name, Come, Sit (means sit until I tell you other wise), Down, No, Off... That's where I'm at with my 15 w/o pup... Joan Bailey's book on has helped me a lot with teaching her

Throw a ball down the hallway and tell the puppy "fetch" as he's running to it. When he's on his way back I tell him "here". This has always worked at laying a good foundation for me.

I personally wouldn't teach sit - no need for it and you don't want it to become their default position. For example, a dog learning whoa later on may be confused and default to the sit then. Not worth the trouble.
name, kennel, here then probably whoa next

That birds are fun, and to come. The last thing taught to a pointing dog IMO should be sit.

I believe there are two short words it will learn first: no and da*nit. By the time my pup's were 6 mo old, they though their names were "you little ba*tard"!
I pity the man that has never been loved by a dog!

Recall (I use the dogs' names for recall). I really don't usually teach them anything else unless I'm going to break them, then I'll teach them to Whoa when they're well over a year old.

the most important thing i try to do is get a puppy to come to me.Sharon wrote:to come whn called - use treats off and on.
giving treat at young age in my opinion is great way.
