Where do you get your birds?
I've posted on a few other forums but not much luck
I also posted on Craigs and another classified site with no luck.
this is my first time training a dog and I'm in the U.P of Michigan where I have yet to find anybody else that trains.
if there is a good place where I could get birds shipped to me that would be ideal

Re: Where do you get your birds?
Look for farm auctions, or flea markets where they sell small animals like chickens and rabbits. They will probably have pigeons also. You should also be able to get your dog in to a lot of grouse and woodcock in the UP.

B&D Game Farn ships
Re: Where do you get your birds?
I just started catching my own pigeons. Go under a bridge at night with a net. VERY EASY.

put a sheet of white paper under it and put bird feed on it.
i caught 6 pigeons today in 15 minutes.
you have to get pigeons coming to your spot by feeding them first then trap them.
go to wal-mart and get bag with open air net on side to put pigeons in.
release pigeons within a few miles of where you caught them and you can catch them over and over.

Re: Where do you get your birds?
I was at wit's end until I found a source. Had a pup on the way and nowhere to buy birds.
I put an ad on craigslist, under the buy/sell area, but got nothing. I then put one in the "gigs" section, offering to pay people to catch them. Got some replies there from people who seemed eager to make some cash, but they didn't come through.
My next idea was posting a flyer at a local grocery store that caters to immigrant farm workers. Many of them work at dairy farms in my area, which usually have pigeons. But on the day I planned to bring a flyer to the store, I found a guy less than a mile from my house who raises homers for a hobby. I thought I'd have to do a lot of explaining to him, about how I wouldn't be harming the birds. But before I could even finish the first sentence, he said I could buy all I want, whenever I want, for 2 bucks apiece! He said a few other bird-dog owners also buy from him. I swear, I almost gave the guy a hug. It's a good deal for both of us. It's a very cheap source of birds for me. And it's a win for him because I'm basically just renting them.
Good luck in your quest. You might want to consider raising your own or maybe contacting a local pigeon-racing club.

Re: Where do you get your birds?
I made a bird trap but the rodents keep setting it off or stealing the bait. I started to fill the bird feeders again to see what I might get coming in but not much yet. I'm quite a ways from town and pigeons seem to be in town. I will probably have to buy some untill I perfect my trapping skills or find a cheaper/easier source
in my area there is not a lot of bird dog people. I have yet to find one less than 200 miles from me

Re: Where do you get your birds?
Don't look for birds, look for trainers. Trainers everywhere need a ready source of birds. Find a pro and ask them where they get their birds.

Trainers are harder to come by than birds in my area. I've put ads out, contacted DU and numerous sportsman clubs and came out with nothingStoneface wrote:Don't look for birds, look for trainers. Trainers everywhere need a ready source of birds. Find a pro and ask them where they get their birds.
There will be some hatched soon in my area but I need them ASAP

Re: Where do you get your birds?
not being smart in any way but get trap and trap pigeons.CacaoandNilla wrote:Yeah I coulda got younger birds closer but I needed flyers ASAP
put out bird feeder in your yard.buy some bread and get pigeons coming.
leave doors open for week so pigeons get used to trap.
put bread in trap.
i got mine off gundogsupply it catchs 6 pigeons at a time.
then buy some grouse scent if you hunt grouse or pheasant scent etc.
i put it on wings of the pigeons.
some say JIM YOU ARE FOOLISH BUT I SEEN SCENTS WORK BASS FISHING and i am believer in them.
if you release pigeons within a few miles you can catch them over and over.
some books like baileys book say never use pigeons only QUAIL.she says pigeons will cause dog not to point.
