I just attended Perfection Kennel seminar w/ Jon and Cindy Hahn. The seminar was quite helpful and I thought their training DVDs were very well done. You might want to check them out at:

See the bottom of the link for another source. I'm not saying one is better than the other.

What kind of dog? In your other thread you mentioned wanting a lab to sit on command at distance.

maybe nothing but maybe a whole book or dvd dedicated to it would be better rather than just 5-10 minutes

Evan Graham has a section in his obedience that talks about E Collar Conditioning..very important watch. There isn't much to it, really...just have to get the dog conditioned to the collar.

There is a youtube video as well about e collar conditioning that I like that makes sense anyway. It involves phasing out jerks of the leash to stimulation, so it's seamless for the dog...I'll try and locate it.

Look on tri tronics site as well, they have ecollar training articles. I think K9 here on this board has a nice write up on her site.

It only takes 5 or 10 minutes for the basic principles.

- never use it if you can't see the dog
- use the lowest level that gets the dog's attention
- put it on snuggly so the dog doesn't get rubbing sores around its neck.
- transition its use from the check cord to the e collar - vital.
- if you are close enough to grab the dog , do that instead of using the collar. "Hands on" is still very effective.
- go slowly . Don't overwhelm the dog.
- TIMING IS EVERYTHING .

Others , I'm sure can add more basic principles.

Trash breaking and flank use are two other subjects that you probably don't need right now.

would I condition my 2 year old lab who is not a hunter the same way as my pup? The 2 year old is pretty good but now after she was fixed all of a sudden has a hankering for dumptrucks. Today she slipped lose and got hit, but she is ok.

Maybe I should start a thread somwhere else

There is NO comprehensive book or dvd out there on ecollar training for pointing dogs. The best book is the "orange book", Training the Sporting Dog, by Smith and Jones.

There are no good dvd's. Best you could do is to get Evan Graham's on force and collar conditioning, and Perfect Start and Perfect Finish for finishing a bird dog with an ecollar.

There is a huge hole informational hole in the world of bird dog training.
LIFE WITHOUT BIRD DOGS AND FLY RODS REALLY ISN'T LIFE AT ALL.

These articles for Pointers may help you. They are from the Dobbs Training Center Library.

As sharon said Timing is everything !

And how you perfect your timing is the hardest part, you have to learn to read the dog, to know what he's going to do the instant before he does it.
Truly, knowing how to read the dog is the most important thing in all training, but with the collar its essential.

Sharon , as a very infrequent and very new e-collar user could you tell me please why a check cord needs to be used first ? I don't use check cords much either.

If I condition my dogs to sit at distance, for example, without using a check -cord can I not then just move on to an e-collar ?

I thought all the other things in your list made good sense but I didn't understand this one .
