Another FF question

Post by terrym » Tue Jul 17, 2012 8:47 am

My 2 yr old Brittany has an amazing retrieve instinct. He has never let a " hit " bird get away. He will chase down live birds in a hunt test and bring them back also. Does water retrieves also no problem. The issue is he does not bring back to hand. He will run back 300 yds with bird in mouth and then spit it out 30-40 ft away from me. My question is how long does a FF session take in number of days? I have a great trainer I can send him to but get major grief from the family when i talk about sending him away. I sent him for only 2 weeks this spring and it helped steady him greatly. Do you think another 2 week session would/could be enough?

FF is not something you rush or cut corners with to save time.....

Some dogs will have it down in 4 weeks but 6 weeks is a more accurate estimate, remembering you don't want to cut corners or feel like you need to finish up
quick for a deadline....it takes as long as it takes to do properly 4-8 weeks depending on the dog. 3_ 10-15 minute sessions a day is my usual schedule.

Personally, I would ask the trainer you are planning to send it to. He both knows his style and is familiar with your dog. He should be able to give you the best estimation.

If you can't get a dog done in 4-6 weeks he's more likely training you......
