I think there is no such thing as best but there are those to avoid. Gun Dog x Richard Wolters. I had a copy and burned it. It' didn't even burn well! After that then any book you find easy to follow.

Say what you want about the wing and string but Wolters drives home the necessity of regular, consistent training sessions. He also gives information (albiet dated) on the development stages of puppies and rudimentary dog physcology. I am not arguing the effectiveness or lack thereof of Wolter's training methods. Rather, I believe that neophyte dog trainers should read and watch everything they can get their hands on, including Wolter's.

For my reading recommendation, Brian Kilcommon's book Good Owners, Great Dogs is a must read for any beginning dog trainer. It is not a hunting dog book but an obedience manual. It gives great insight on how dogs learn, the roll of the trainer in teaching situations, pack social systems, and pitfalls that can ruin the potential of a good dog. Once a would-be trainer understands how to teach a dog, what can be taught is limited only by imagination and and the laws of gravity.
