Can I teach my young ES to whoa without birds

Post by m2244 » Sun Oct 21, 2012 11:55 am

He is about 9 months old now. He has had nearly 100 wild flushed by now. He intently pointed a dead bird for me this week which really wasn't much help since the bird was only about 4 feet from where i was standing, but it was good to see the intense look and stance.

Anyway, I have been wondering if it would be counterproductive to teach him to whoa without birds, similar to teaching a lab to stay, without the sit part. Or should this only be taught in relation to birds?

you are fine to teach a dog to whoa without birds. To me whoa means stop, nothing to do with birds but Different training books/people do it different ways.

You are confusing whoa with pointing. Whoa is simply a command to stop and not move. IMO whoa should be taught in the yard without birds. Once learned it can then be used in your field training.

Better done by not using birds. Go to just yard training. Then introduce birds again later after the pups mastered woah.
