young dog brakes point

i have a year an 1/2 English setter he will point but wont hold long enough 4 me to get to him and brakes point i dont know what to do to stop this ples help

At that stage , he shouldn't be able to break because you are using a c cord. MOre backyard work on whoa is needed. A launcher would help too.

At six months, who cares if he breaks point, he is still a puppy and will learn in time. A check cord will help. Another, broke dog will help even more. I would advise getting your dog on as many birds as possible and he will soon hold long enough for you to shoot.

I would say a check cord or e collar is needed to correct this. I would also recommend correcting this quickly so he doesn't get in the habit and think it is an ok behavior.

he has been worked on pigeons in the yard he was doing good than all of the sudden he got in this bad habit sounds like i have to go back to more yard work

Just remember he is still a very young dog, especially for a Setter. Don't worry about any serious hunting yet [only shoot birds he has handled properly] Also, take Sharon's advise....More yard work and controlled situations.

Dechase is a type of training where the dog learns he can't catch the bird. There are different ways to do it. But the standard and most used is allowing the dog to chase until it figures out it can't catch them. There are quicker ways to do this though.

Could you explain a quicker way ? Or the best way ? PM is ok if you don't want to put it in this thread . I have a 1 year old GSP that was supposed to be a started dog . So far it seems that the only thing he knows is his name .

Amazing how the terminology changes with the era's..................Dechase is now what was known as point em or knock em.Used to be you'd run em till they pointed and then kill the pointed bird,I still use that method as wild birds have far better timing than any human could ever try to replicate with an electronic launcher.
