How long do you leave him in there? Some puppies that age can stay in there all day but it is unreasonable to expect any pup to be able to. I wouldn't crate for more than 4 hours at a time. Your crate may also be too big. They just need enough room to turn around. If your crate is the proper size and you are only leaving her in for a couple hours, have a vet check her out.

Also do you make sure he goes outside before you crate him and not just tie him up outside for a few minutes?

One hour crate time for each month of age.
5 months = 5 hours at a time.

If you want to be technical it is 1 hour per month plus 1 so that = 6.

Use a smaller crate. And let him out before putting him in.

Agreed. My rescue lab/golden came pretty well house broke at like 2 and a half months. He also got into the food bin when he was older and ate 10 lbs of food. He couldn't move much afterwards, but had a look about him that he had accomplished his lifes goal.

And was probably more than ready for another meal within an hour

We're getting ready to head out the door to go Quail hunting. The wife is currently making a HUGE pot of Chili (with venison burger, elk burger and buffalo burger for the meat). As soon as it's ready to have the stove turned off, she and I and the dogs are going hunting. We'll have chili & cornbread for a couple meals and she will can the rest for use at later dates.

I think he's already tried all this advice. Sounds like he's got a pup that doesn't care about laying in his own mess. I think the best way to cure him of this would be to take a couple steps backwards and start letting him out at shorter intervals. Beat him to the punch and let him out before he has the need to go. Does the pup still have accidents in the house? Maybe it associates the crate as being where he can go to the bathroom. Have you tried getting a new crate? Or, if he knows not to go in the rest of the house, maybe put him in the bathroom for a day and see if he holds it since he associated that with the rest of the no poop/potty zone that is your house.

How controled is the pups access to food and water, if you control when it goes in you can predict it coming out. Some folks I know feed them, then put them in the crate for an hour then take them out. The book "How to house train your dog in 7 days" used that as one of the pillars of that method.

I would also use something like urine off to properly clean the box between accidents as well.

A 5x10 kennel run with a dog house. Let him live outside.

How do you react to this? Does he get punished? Do you catch him in the act?
