Training Continued

Post by Bluesky2012 » Fri Dec 28, 2012 5:00 pm

I am getting my 8 month old GSP back from the trainer tomorrow. He has been for one month just to get the basics down while I was gone for some training with the Marine corps. He is now steady on point, retrieves to hand about 85% of the time, and gun conditioned. He's had about 100 birds shot over him and I will hit him a good bit more the rest of the season.

Obviously I am going to talk with the guy who trained him for the past month on his recommendations to stick with a good plan, but what are y'all's recommendations on what I should focus on next?

I would like to do some good formal obedience work but don't know where to really start with that.

Also I am considering having him force fetched this summer but am not sure if that's really worth it at his age with only one season behind him at that point.

Any suggestions on where to go after I pick him up tomorrow would be appreciated.

I wouldn't pick up the dog unless the trainer has an hour to spend with you to show you what he has done with your dog. He should not have any problem showing you how he was doing it so that you can continue to do it at home. If he can't do it tomorrow, I would wait until he can spend the time with you. It is more important that you continue to do what he has done. You don't want to change gears and confuse the dog if he is doing well. JMO.

And he is the one to ask where to go from where he left off.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

I agree and that's why I mentioned that in my original post, but I would still like input from other knowledgeable people, not sarcastic responses.

That wasn't sarcastic, it was just telling you where to get the answer to your legitimate question. There is not a single one of us that know where your pup needs more work and there is not a map that says this is what need to be done for every pup They are all different and your trainer is the only one that knows what need to be followed up on or where you need to go from here.

Sorry, I should have explained it to you better rather than assume you already knew that.
